nesting northern gannets,(Morus bassanus) Cape St.Mary's Visitor Center

    Cape St.Mary's Ecological Preserve:

Located on the southern shore of Avalon Peninsula, Cape St.Mary's is North America's only location where nesting northern gannets can be closely approached on foot. The birds utilize a sea-stack just 20 feet from land to raise their young. Through the din of their vocalizations and "seabird nesting perfume" the experience is unforgettable.

Black-legged kittiwakes, both common and thick-billed murre nest on ledges along side the gannets. During the annual cappelin spawning, whales join the feeding birds right beneath our vantage point. Bald eagles, peregrine falcons are often seen cruising by looking for an opportunity among the nesting birds.
