    Birds of Gros Morne

Gros Morne's unique geology provides habitats for a variety of birds. At 803m, Gros Morne Mountain is the province's second highest peak. The altitudinal gradient from sea level to mountain top allows grassland species such as savannah sparrows to be found near shore and rock ptarmigan on the barren summits above.

On a climb up Gros Morne Mountain's James Callaghan trail, both willow and rock ptarmigan can be reliably found. It is eastern North America's southern-most population of both rock ptarmigan and arctic hare.

Barrow's goldeneye, harlequin duck, greater yellowlegs, gray-cheeked thrush, blackpoll warbler, boreal owl, rough-legged hawk and black-backed woodpecker can all be found nesting here.

grazing caribou,(Rangifer tarandus) Trail to Western Brook Pond boat ride

    Gros Morne National Park:

Newfoundlanders cherish this part of their island as much as the numerous moose, caribou, ptarmigan and unusual plants.

Towns such as St.Paul's, Rocky Harbor and Cow's Head nestle along the fiord lined shore of the Great Northern Peninsula.

Tundra and barrens at water's edge give way to wooded slopes leading to barren summits.

A highlight for all visitors is a boat ride on Western Brook Pond into the fiord with 700m shear cliffs rising above.

L'anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site:

L'anse Aux Meadows is steeped in both human and natural history.Until July some years, pack ice holds on and the hardy folks living here on the very northern tip of Newfounland are as welcoming as anyone you will meet.

Here is where subsistence living among the local population began over 1,000 years ago when vikings first settled from across the Davis Strait from Greenland.

Boat rides among the oft-encountered icebergs and whales are a summer feature of this adventure.
